I have used this site for my younger three children. I also have a slow learning child that is in the advanced level books and has improved on his reading.

POPCORN words (frequently used sight words)

My stuggles with these words so much, and with these being the mostly used words among the sight word's list, I  decided to make something fun for him to remember and practice these words in a way. I try to get practice worksheets for him to rewrite, find, and search out for these words. I go to sight words worksheets, Dolch Sight Word Activities, and popcorn words printables. I also have my son log into  Starfall's Learn to read and Progressive Phonics for free online books for him to read and build up his phonics and sight words. I have also found a list of these popcorn words at popcorn words and sight words kindergarten.

I have also created my own visual enforcer of these words for my son. I have created popcorn kernals with the words on them, a popcorn bucket (son colored in the stripes), and then I laminated them. I then added the words he knows, and will be adding 2 more a day until he is caught up with his class. I took some vanilla paper and drew the kernals on it, white poster board and made the popcorn bucket.

My DS5 is having a hard time remmebering his site words, and he also finds them boring to go over, so I am always tring to find new ways to grab his attention long enough for him to remember them. I had him learning with that caterpiller idea where a new word is added and he can watch the body grow, but he lost interest in that real quick. SO, for now I am onto a new idea with dite words, a growing flower garden. Right now we have one flower growing, and it has not budded yet. ;o)



Sparklebox:Assemble a high-frequency word plant



I went onto the internet to search for ideas from fellow teachers and homeschoolers for suggestions and ideas to help him to learn them. I cam across this website called SPARKLEBOX.COM (ALL FREE). THey had other ideas for site words, but I thought that this one was kinda fun to watch and learn at the same time. I just love the idea that as my son learns new words he can watch the flower grow until it gets a bloom. I printed out the leaves and flower and then I laminated them for more stability. (gotta love the laminator). The flowers are growing in front of our Homemade apple tree that is being used for our character education.

Here is the start to my Apples for Character tree is made from brown shipping paper as the trunk, 4 sheets of green posterboard for the tree's leaves, and 1 posterboard for the ground.

 The apples look like this... I only will show a couple, but I will post the link to share the apples as my sons learn them. I downloaded the editable red apples on sparklebox.com and replaced the letters that were there with the character words. I will cut these out individually and then laminate them for more duribility. Then I can just tape them onto the tree. I have found that I can teach this to all of my children, and I know that it won't hurt starting out at a young age.

I have found numerous sites to help establish a list of characters that can be taught to children. There is also places to go to print out worksheets to aid in teaching these to children.

Caterpiller Site word helper

I saw this idea on another site, but you had to pay for it, so I decided to create one for my children. I saw it as a better way to make learning these words a fun and interactive way.

I went into powerpoint and designed the head of the caterpiller.

then I created a template from the head to print out and trace onto construction paper. As my children learn a new word, we add the new word (body) onto the caterpiller.. sooner or later it will fill up the door.

So far its a winner, My son loves it.
